Pet Loss and Grief
A guide for support and comfort
Things to Remember
Don’t Ignore These Feelings
Experiencing strong emotions after losing your animal companion or pet is normal and an essential part of grieving. Remember to regularly check in with yourself by asking:
- ‘What am I thinking?’
- ‘How am I feeling?’
- ‘What do I need right now?’
A Bond Like No Other
The bond between humans and their animal companions is unparalleled, and we recognize the profound impact your animal companion had on your life. This bond is not understood by all but we understand that your grief of losing such an important bond can be challenging. Acknowledging and celebrating this unique bond can be a meaningful part of your grief journey.
Grief Is Unique
We want to assure you that your grief is a natural response, and the bond you had with your animal companion is distinct and deeply personal. You understand that relationship better than anyone else. The depth of emotions you’re experiencing in the wake of your loss is uniquely yours. While others may grieve the same pet, no one can fully comprehend your feelings, as each person’s journey through grief is individual. You hold the deepest insight into your own experience.
What's Next for Me
Memories
Thinking about the sweet memories you had with your animal companion is a wonderful way for their memory to live on. Sharing memories with others, create a journal full of pictures, or writing a letter to your animal companion are just a few suggestions that might aid you in your grief journey. Begin with recalling a favorite moment you shared with your animal companion. How did you feel? What made it special?
Know Your Supports
Reach out. You are not alone. Whether it’s with friends, family, or support groups, sharing your journey can provide comfort and understanding. Knowing what supports you have in place can be a tremendous help in navigating the difficult moments after the loss of your animal companion. It’s important to remember that grief is not something we ‘get over’; instead, it’s something that we learn to cope with. Talking with others who may have experienced similar losses is important. Consider finding a grief group.
Your New Normal
The loss of an animal companion reshapes your daily life, leaving behind a void where once familiar routines provided comfort and joy. It’s natural to struggle with this change, but remember, adapting to a new normal is part of the healing process. Consider introducing new rituals that honor your animal companion’s memory, or adjust your routine to better suit your current emotional state. These steps can help you navigate your grief while gradually building a framework of comfort and stability in your life. Allow yourself to experience this transition at your own pace, finding solace in both the memories of the past and the possibilities of the future.
