The Fleet
Mobile Surgery Unit - NEW
First deployed in early 2022, the newest vehicle in the K-State SM/CO fleet is a beautiful upgrade from the original unit. It is a 32-foot-long gooseneck trailer weighing in at just over 10,000 lbs. Although is maintains the functional footprint of the OG, it has some very significant upgrades. WINDOWS!! The new trailer boasts four windows that allow for an improved surgical environment. Like the Wellness on Wheels multi-purpose vehicle, it was manufactured by Laboit and has matching interior design.
Wellness on Wheels (WOW)
The K-State Wellness on Wheels vehicle is a 33-foot Freightliner designed as a Swiss army knife type of multi-purpose vehicle. It is utilized by Community Outreach as a clinic on wheels. The WOW has client and patient seating, exam space, mobile digital X-Ray, a fully functional surgery suite, dental capabilities and a basic lab set-up. It can be retrofitted to be deployed for disaster response and has plenty of kennel space to hospitalize patients as needed.
Mobile Surgery Unit - the OG (original)
The original K-State Mobile Surgery Unit hit the road in May of 2015 and has logged over 260,000 miles and 36,000 surgeries since then. It boasts a prep area with a wet sink and fully functional two-table surgical suite. Although its surgical capabilities are very much still operational, mechanically the OG spends very little time on the road. Instead, it is housed offsite and serves as a standing surgery suite at remote shelter partners allowing more frequent visits and decreasing wear and tear on the new mobile surgery unit.
