Breeding Soundness Examinations
This exam can be used to provide an assessment of breeding capabilities of a mare prior to purchase or to help in deciding whether to breed your mare. This exam evaluates the potential of a mare to successfully become pregnant and carry a foal to term. Included in this exam are a physical exam, external reproductive exam, palpation and ultrasound, vaginal speculum exam, uterine culture and cytology, and uterine biopsy.
Breeding Managment
Mares can be managed on farm, haul-in, or at the VHC for live-cover breeding and artificial insemination with cooled or frozen semen. Frozen semen mares can be initially managed on farm but must be brought to the VHC once the ovulation induction agent is administered prior to breeding.
Embryo Transfer
We can manage your mare to prepare her for embryo transfer. You must provide the recipient mare. Embryos can be recovered from the donor mare and transferred to the owner-provided recipient mare.
Oocyte Collection
Oocytes can be recovered via transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration in the live mare and sent to a lab for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI.) Contact the VHC for more information.
Oocytes can also be recovered from ovaries that have been harvested post-mortem. Contact the VHC for assistance during this difficult time.
Pregnancy Diagnosis and Fetal Evaluation
We can determine whether your mare is pregnant and help you decide what next steps are best for you. We can also evaluate the fetus to estimate its health prior to foaling. This is particularly useful when managing high-risk pregnancies.
Foaling Services
We can assist you by foaling out your pregnant mare with full VHC staff available in case of emergency. Your pregnant mare will receive 24-hour care and her foaling process will be monitored by a DVM.
Payment is due upon scheduling services and is non-transferrable and non-refundable. To schedule or for more information, please call the VHC at 785-532-5700.
