Radiology Residency Program

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University is offering a three year residency in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology. The Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology service is supported by two board certified specialists. The residency is further supported by board certified faculty in large and small animal medicine and surgery, anesthesiology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, oncology and zoological medicine. Responsibilities of the resident include participation in the operation of the clinical radiology service, assisting in instruction of the fourth year veterinary students and participation in the didactic courses offered to first and second year veterinary students. Responsibilities will include night and weekend emergency duties on a rotating schedule.

Objectives

1. Advanced training in diagnostic imaging. Develop skills in diagnostic imaging to include diagnostic radiology, special radiographic procedures, ultrasound, CT, MRI and nuclear imaging.
2. Training in clinical investigation.
3. Training in scientific writing and literature evaluation.
4. Training in didactic teaching and scientific presentations.
5. Preparation for Certification Examination by the American College of Veterinary Radiology.
6. Develop communication skills.

Thirty six months of supervised post-doctoral training in veterinary diagnostic imaging will be offered. Case presentations to the radiology department by species include approximately 800 large animals, 4200 small animals, 100 avian and other small animals per year. One or two rotations at other Colleges of Veterinary Medicine may be allowed depending on the interests of the resident. This would be designed to provide additional experience in alternative imaging or exposure to other animal species not seen in sufficient numbers at Kansas State University.

The facilities and equipment available in the VHC for support of this program include AgfaCR, a Phillips Digital flouoroscopy equipped special procedures room, one large animal radiology suite with Eklin DR unit, Siemen ultrasound machine, Equistand (Diagnostic Imaging Inc.) nuclear medicine gamma camera with mirage software, GE 16 slice CT, a Hitachi 7000 permanent magnet MRI and a radioactive isolation unit for housing animals treated with radioactive iodine.

Residents receive semi-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Resident Advisor and Hospital Director. Annual reappointment is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.

The resident must be physically present for orientation on the first day of the program.
