The equine service at the VHC is supported by 5 board certified specialists and one emergency clinician. The equine residency is further supported by board certified faculty in anesthesiology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology and radiology. Of 2,200 equine hospital accessions, approximately 440 cases are managed by the surgery service. The program is designed to provide clinical and academic training to fulfill American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) requirements and prepare the resident for board certification and a career in academic or private referral practice.

The successful candidate will complete 90% of their clinical service obligations in the equine section and 10% in the agricultural practices section over the course of the training program. The resident is expected to participate in all aspects of equine and food animal clinical surgical and medical services including primary and referral emergency surgical and intensive care duty. Responsibilities will include night and weekend emergency duties on a rotating schedule. The resident is expected to assume primary care of hospitalized patients on specified weekends and holidays. In addition to management of the hospitalized patients, the resident will provide clinical, didactic and laboratory instruction for veterinary students and participate in continuing education programs. With demonstrated progress in the program, the resident will be assigned increasing clinical and instructional responsibility. Enrollment in the graduate school and completion of a program of study leading to the Master of Science degree is optional and requires prior approval.

The resident will be expected to attend conferences, rounds, journal clubs and other academic activities during the program. Emphasis will be placed on developing and publishing clinical observations. The resident will be required to submit one publication to a refereed journal during the program, preferably form the Master’s research project.

Residents receive semi-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Resident Advisor and Hospital Director. Annual reappointment is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.
